Serbia Commits to Neutrality Amid EU Pressure
His comments came in response to remarks made by the country’s EU integration minister, Nemanja Starovic, who suggested that Serbia could align with the European Union’s policies in exchange for expedited membership talks.
Vucic rejected this idea, emphasizing that Serbia’s foreign policy would not be swayed by short-term benefits.
According to the president, Serbia's strategy of maintaining good relations with both Russia and the EU has proven successful and would continue.
He stressed that this approach was grounded in Serbia’s commitment to being an independent and sovereign state.
Vucic further criticized Starovic's comments, calling them "careless" and suggested that both domestic and international media had jumped to conclusions too quickly.
"Serbia will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation," he reiterated.
Earlier this week, in an interview with a news agency, Minister Starovic explained that Serbia opposes sanctions against Russia because they would have minimal impact on Russia itself but would severely harm Serbia’s economy.
However, he indicated that Serbia might align fully with Brussels’ policies once EU membership becomes a tangible prospect.
Serbia remains one of the few European nations that has resisted imposing sanctions on Russia or openly supporting Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
Vucic has previously stated that the European Union has exerted significant pressure on Serbia to abandon its neutral position and cut ties with Moscow.
In May, Vucic demonstrated his commitment to this stance by attending the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, alongside Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, despite facing considerable pressure from Brussels.
