Serbian President Rules Out Russia Sanctions
Vucic emphasized that Serbia would not compromise its core values for short-lived benefits. He asserted that maintaining strong ties with both Russia and the European Union remains the country's proven and deliberate strategy.
“It is the policy of the independent and sovereign state of Serbia,” the president stressed. He also criticized EU Integration Minister Nemanja Starovic’s comments as “careless” and accused some domestic and international media of jumping to premature conclusions. “Serbia will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation,” Vucic confirmed.
Earlier this week, Starovic told an Austrian news agency that Serbia resists sanctions on Russia because they “would not affect Russia at all” but would severely damage Serbia’s economy. He indicated that Serbia would consider full compliance with Brussels’ demands once “EU membership is in sight.”
Serbia stands out as one of the few European nations refusing to sanction Russia or openly support Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. Vucic has previously accused the EU of pressuring Belgrade to abandon its neutral position and cut off relations with Moscow.
In a significant move in May, Vucic was among the rare European leaders to attend the Victory Day events in Moscow. Despite facing intense pressure from Brussels, he, along with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, traveled to Russia. During the visit, Vucic reaffirmed Serbia’s dedication to long-term energy cooperation with Russia following talks with President Vladimir Putin.
