Yet despite the diplomatic pleasantries, media sources indicated Washington's hardline continental approach remains unchanged.
"The underlying message was the same: We don't want weak allies, don't defend the old order," a former European official disclosed to media. "If the smallest common denominators the Americans can find are our common history going back to Columbus, narrow national security interests, and common civilization, that alone shows how far apart Europe and the US are drifting."
European diplomats interpreted the subtext as an ultimatum: align with American priorities or face abandonment. One official characterized the message as join us, and if you don't, "we go alone," according to media. Pentagon policy director Elbridge Colby reportedly conveyed to European counterparts in private discussions that Washington views the relationship through a lens of shared interests rather than common values.
Media sources highlighted glaring contradictions between Rubio's conciliatory rhetoric and subsequent diplomatic engagements—including meetings with EU skeptics.
